If there was one thing that could be said of being born into a noble family, it was that the shoes were never easy to fill. For Yoruichi, life was full of prying eyes, high standards, and doubting superiors. Her earliest memories consisted of stern voices and starched clothes, of bitter tea and hushed voices at family ceremonies. Things only worsened when the Shihouin clan found itself tied up in a battle that ended with the demise of Yoruichi’s parents, and as a result, she was promoted to the head of the family at a tender age where most of her peers were merely beginning to explore future career plans. Nevertheless, out of a sense of duty to those who had taken so much time to care for her wellbeing, Yoruichi took up the burden, outperforming any expectations that the elders had previously held for her. After minimal training, Yoruichi was considered competent enough to serve as the head of the Gotei special forces, a job that she held for quite some time.

To this day, Yoruichi isn’t sure what exactly began to drive her away from the life she had grown so accustomed to. Perhaps it had something to with the peaceful state of Soul Society, a sense of stagnancy that left the young woman restless. Perhaps it had something to do with her young bodyguard, whose innocence and passion brought Yoruichi to the realization that she lacked both, having lost them over the course of all those years she spent trapped under her family’s name. Perhaps it was the reckless abandon she saw in her best friend, a willingness to give the higher-ups a hearty ‘fuck you’ in order to fulfill his ambitions and to find something greater in life, something she desperately wanted for herself.

It was a difficult decision at best. Even harder to grasp was the fact that, after having her entire life planned out step by step, the thought of seeking freedom and making her decisions was almost frightening. Yet Yoruichi knew it had to be done. There were to be no regrets, she would tell herself. No matter what happened, she would at least live knowing that she had tried to achieve something more.

When the Central 46 requested to know whether or not she had helped the traitor, Urahara Kisuke, to escape Soul Society, she had not flinched. When they stripped her of her status, Yoruichi knew that she would have to leave as well. She left neither a trace nor a letter behind before heading to the human world.

Now, she knows that it was the right decision. Not because that she managed to escape the turmoil within Soul Society, for she came back regardless, nor because of that orange-haired ryoka, for she has met many special people in her lifetime. No, it was the right decision because she was finally allowed to be the roaming alley cat she had always longed to be.

Unsurprisingly, Yoruichi has spent the past year supporting the grassroots New Movement, often trying to forge good relations with the vaizoreds—something which was easier for an exiled shinigami than for someone still employed by the Gotei. Also, as she continues to be one of the strongest shinigami in Soul Society, Yoruichi has often been dispatched to the real world to fend off Aizen’s espada, and she has been considered by many as one of the few pillars preventing a complete overtaking of Soul Society by the arrancar.
